Banbury Madni Masjid Community Clean Up Drive: Working Together for a Cleaner Banbury

A clean and welcoming neighbourhood benefits everyone. At Banbury Madni Masjid, we believe that caring for our surroundings is an important part of serving the community. Through our Community Clean Up Drive in Banbury, we are encouraging children, families and local residents to work together to keep public spaces clean, green and safe.

This initiative brings people together through practical activities, including litter picking and garden cleaning. It also gives young people an opportunity to learn about environmental responsibility, teamwork and the importance of looking after the places where they live.

Young Volunteers Making a Difference in Grimsbury

Our community clean-up initiative has already seen children from Banbury Mosque take part in supervised litter-picking activities in Grimsbury.

Equipped with high-visibility clothing and litter pickers, the young volunteers helped tidy local pavements and surrounding public areas. Their participation demonstrated how small actions can contribute to a cleaner neighbourhood.

The initiative also received recognition in the local newspaper, Banbury Guardian, which published an article on 12 October 2026 highlighting the children's efforts to improve their neighbourhood.

We are pleased to see young members of our community taking an active interest in keeping Banbury clean and helping others.

Cleanliness Is an Important Part of Islam

Islam places great importance on cleanliness, personal hygiene and responsibility towards our surroundings.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Cleanliness is half of faith.”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 223)
This beautiful teaching reminds Muslims that cleanliness is an important part of practising their faith.
Keeping streets, gardens and public spaces free from litter is a practical way to demonstrate care for our neighbours and the environment.

Supporting a Cleaner and Greener Banbury

Our Community Clean Up Drive focuses on practical activities that help maintain cleaner and more welcoming local spaces.
The programme includes three main activities:

1. Community Litter Picking

Litter-picking sessions encourage volunteers to collect rubbish from designated public areas, helping to keep footpaths and neighbourhood spaces tidy.
These activities also help children understand the importance of disposing of waste responsibly and respecting shared spaces.

2. Community Fridge Activities

Our planned community fridge sessions form another part of the initiative's schedule.
The Banbury Community Fridge is an existing local resource that supports community wellbeing and encourages responsible use of available food.
These sessions provide another opportunity for people to engage in positive community activities.

3. Community Garden Cleaning

Garden-cleaning sessions are planned to help improve and maintain local outdoor spaces.
By encouraging volunteers to participate, we hope to promote a greater sense of responsibility for shared environments and create more pleasant spaces for everyone.

Community Clean Up Drive Schedule

Banbury Madni Masjid has organised a series of activities across October 2026, November 2026 and January 2027.

Working Together With Local Support

We would like to thank Cherwell District Council for supporting this initiative through its Brighter Futures funding.

This support has helped provide the equipment needed to organise community clean-up activities and encourage participation.

As reported by the Banbury Guardian, there are also plans to extend similar activities to Boxhedge, Neithrop and Ruscote, helping more neighbourhoods benefit from organised community involvement.

By working together with local organisations, volunteers and residents, we hope to develop a lasting culture of environmental responsibility and community cooperation.

Encouraging the Next Generation to Care for Their Community

One of the most valuable aspects of this initiative is the opportunity it provides for children to participate in meaningful community work.

Taking part in supervised clean-up activities helps young people develop teamwork, responsibility and respect for their surroundings.

It also demonstrates that serving the community does not always require a large contribution. Even collecting litter or helping maintain a shared space can make a positive difference.

At Banbury Madni Masjid, we believe that involving younger generations in these activities can encourage habits of kindness, cooperation and environmental awareness.
