Ramadan is a sacred month of fasting, worship, and spiritual renewal. When a fast is intentionally broken without a valid reason, Islam requires a specific form of expiation known as Kaffarah.

What Is Kaffarah?

Kaffarah is a charitable atonement required when a Muslim deliberately breaks a fast during Ramadan without any valid excuse. While missing a fast due to illness, pregnancy, travel, or other permissible reasons may be made up later or compensated through Fidya, intentionally breaking a fast is considered a serious matter that requires Kaffarah.
In Islam, Kaffarah not only seeks forgiveness from Allah but also serves as a means to support the vulnerable by feeding those who struggle with hunger.

When Is Kaffarah Necessary?

Kaffarah becomes due if a fasting obligation is invalidated intentionally without a valid reason. This includes actions such as eating, drinking, or engaging in prohibited behaviour during fasting hours, knowing that it will break the fast.
It must be paid even if the fast is broken late in the day, as the intention and action still invalidate the fast. The purpose of Kaffarah is both atonement and community support.

How Much Is Kaffarah for Ramadan 2026 (UK)?

In the UK, the standard method of fulfilling Kaffarah if you cannot fast for 60 consecutive days is by feeding the poor. The usual rate is calculated based on providing 60 meals to those in need, at an average cost of about £5 per meal. This means £300 per missed or intentionally broken fast.
