Fiqh of Fasting – Understanding the Rules of Sawm


Banbury Madni Masjid is pleased to invite brothers and sisters to a Fiqh of Fasting course, designed to provide a clear and practical understanding of the Islamic rulings related to fasting (Sawm). This important session will help attendees prepare correctly for fasting, particularly as Ramadan approaches, by learning the principles derived from the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Fasting is a core act of worship in Islam, and understanding its rules ensures that our worship is valid, sincere, and accepted by Allah ﷻ.


About the Event


This course will be delivered by Shaykh Ammar Faiz, who will guide attendees through the essential jurisprudential aspects of fasting in a structured and accessible manner. The session is suitable for all adults, whether you are new to Islamic studies or seeking to refresh your understanding.


Key Topics Covered


The course will explore:

  • The intention (Niyyah) for fasting and its correct timing
  • Differences between obligatory, necessary, and voluntary fasts
  • Actions that invalidate the fast, including forgetful and unintentional acts
  • Situations requiring makeup (Qada) and expiation (kaffarah)
  • Cases where makeup is required without expiation
  • Valid exemptions from fasting
  • An introduction to i‘tikaf, including its types, conditions, and nullifiers
