Banbury Madni Masjid is proud to share the launch of a new community initiative that brings joy, inclusivity, and a much-needed wellness opportunity for women in Banbury. Weekly ladies-only swimming sessions at Spiceball Leisure Centre have officially been announced, thanks to the tireless efforts of community leaders, local organisations, and Cherwell District Council.
This exciting development is more than just a swimming class—it’s a victory for women’s empowerment, comfort, and health in our local community.
The first ladies-only swimming session in Banbury will take place on Friday, July 25, from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the Spiceball Leisure Centre. From there onwards, the sessions will continue weekly at the same time, offering a consistent and secure environment for women to stay active.
Girls aged 14 and above are also welcome to attend, giving teenagers and young women a chance to develop healthy habits and confidence in a comfortable setting.
This initiative has been years in the making, with strong backing from members of Banbury Madni Masjid. The mosque has consistently advocated for greater inclusivity and wellness resources tailored to the needs of local Muslim women and women from diverse backgrounds.
A spokesperson for the mosque shared:
“Banbury mosque has campaigned for many years for this cause, and we are very pleased to have contributed to the development of this project and warmly welcome the new women-only sessions at the Spiceball Leisure Centre, which are available to all women in Banbury.”
This initiative is a true reflection of Banbury Madni Masjid’s commitment to women’s wellness, religious accommodation, and the right to feel comfortable while pursuing health and fitness.
While many women enjoy regular fitness activities, others may feel uncomfortable swimming around men due to religious, cultural, or personal reasons. These new ladies only swimming sessions create an environment where all women—regardless of background—can enjoy physical activity without fear or discomfort.
This project not only supports Muslim women but also serves every woman in Banbury who prefers a private, women-only setting. It’s an invitation to step into the water with confidence.
A special thank you goes to Yasmin Kaduji and her dedicated team, whose consistent efforts and coordination were essential to making these swimming sessions a reality.
“We are especially grateful to Yasmin Kaduji and her team for their part in making this a reality. We appreciate the collaborative efforts and expect this to have a wonderful impact on our community,” added the mosque spokesperson.
The launch of ladies-only swimming in Banbury is a shining example of what can happen when local voices are heard, and communities come together with a shared purpose.
The support from Cherwell District Council has been instrumental in turning feedback into action. Following a survey conducted last year, the council acted on the clear call from residents for more inclusive and tailored services.
A spokesperson for Cherwell District Council said:
“Taking into account residents’ views on the service we offer is really important, and we are grateful for the insight received from the local community to identify this need.”
Such collaboration shows that when faith groups, councils, and residents work together, we can create meaningful changes that benefit everyone.
Campaigners are already looking ahead and hope to expand the education programme in the future. One idea currently in discussion is the introduction of sessions where mothers can bring their children, promoting family bonding and early fitness habits in a culturally respectful setting.
This would be another fantastic step forward in creating holistic wellness opportunities for women and families across Banbury.
